Acoustic retrofit of elevator shafts in residential buildings
Technical Challenges
Structural noise from elevator operation affects neighboring units, especially at night.
Solutions
Install sound-absorbing materials and elastic vibration isolation pads on the interior walls of elevator shafts to block solid-borne noise transmission.
Implementation Results
Adjacent indoor noise reduced by 22 dB, with a significant boost in homeowner satisfaction.
Project Background
This high-end residential complex has 32 floors, with 4 high-speed elevators per building. Some units are located adjacent to the elevator shafts. Structural-borne sound and mechanical noise generated during elevator operation transmit through the walls into the interior, becoming particularly noticeable during quiet nighttime hours, leading to complaints from multiple homeowners.
Technical Details
- Shaft wall treatment: Apply 5 mm thick rock wool acoustic panels with a coverage of 100%.
- Elastic Vibration Isolation: Install elastic vibration isolation pads on elevator guide rail brackets.
- Carriage Vibration Damping: Replace with high-performance shock absorbers to reduce operational vibration.
- Door Noise Reduction: Optimize the door opening/closing mechanism to minimize impact noise.
- Control cabinet soundproofing: Install a soundproof enclosure for the elevator control cabinet.
